Demeter Earrings || Harvest Inspired Earrings • African Jasper, Carnelian, Sodalite, Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, Gold Sheen Obsidian
|| Demeter || Goddess of the Harvest
I make these earrings by delicately shaping wire around a dowel to create the leaf shape. They are inspired by all things autumn and the leaves that blow past my studio window. I use brass, 14k gold filled, or sterling silver wire and African "turquoise" jasper or spotted teal jasper beads, carnelian, amethyst, sodalite, lapis lazuli, and gold sheen obsidian.
Jasper, a variety of the silica mineral chert, has various names that can come from a wide range of places like their color: bloodstone, green, lemon; from their pattern: orbicular, poppy, leopardskin, landscape, Picasso; or from a place name: Morrisonite, Mookite. Jasper can be found all over the world and has been used in jewelry for centuries.
Lapis Lazuli contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue), and pyrite (metallic yellow or gold). According to historians humans have had a connection to lapis lazuli as far back as more than 6,500 years ago. Ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome treasured Lapis Lazuli in jewelry and statutes.
Like lapis lazuli, carnelian was highly valued by ancient peoples and used in rings and signets by the Greeks and Romans. Kings favored this stone as it was believed in many civilizations to be lucky and that it brought courage to the wearer.
Snowflake Obsidian is natural volcanic glass containing inclusions of a mineral polymorph of silica called Cristobalite.
CARE AND CONSIDERATIONS
Untreated brass (copper alloy #230) will patina quickly for a more rugged look. If you want the brass to stay shiny for a long time, avoid getting your earrings wet and polish often.
14k Gold-Filled jewelry is significantly more tarnish resistant and precious than gold-plated. Gold-filled has an actual layer of karat gold vs a thin film on gold-plated. All of The Black Walnut's gold-filled jewelry pieces are proudly 12-karat or 14-karat and meet the federal quality standards set by the FTC.
Polish your jewelry with a soft cloth and avoid using harsh chemicals to clean. Be sure to store in a dry place. Each piece is designed by The Black Walnut Studio in Greensboro North Carolina. Designs are handmade and may vary slightly with each order.
